natte tressée en laine

The origins of wool

Traces of wool can be found in Asia Minor as far back as the Stone Age. It appears in Europe 9500 years ago. Wool developed a lot from the 13th century, when its trade exploded in a large part of Europe. The wool industry continued to develop until the 18th century, when competition from cotton overshadowed it.

Worldwide production

Sheep wool is produced in more than a hundred countries, including China (480,000 tons), Australia, New Zealand (165,000 tons), United Kingdom and Iran (60,000 tons). France is far behind with a production of only 15,000 tons per year.

Benefits

Wool has the advantage of being totally renewable and biodegradable. It is produced all year round by nearly a billion sheep, which produce 2.1 million tonnes per year. It is a universal fiber found in most of the usual applications of textile materials: clothing, furnishings, technology.
