Our models in Viscose / LyocellArtificial & Mineral Material

A cellulosic fiber

The viscose

Viscose is obtained from the cellulose found on the walls of plants. This cellulose is made from wood pulp, which makes viscose a cellulosic fiber just like linen or cotton. On the other hand, its manufacture is not considered natural but artificial: a natural material is used which is subjected to a certain number of chemical transformations to end up with a textile material whose composition is quite close to the initial polymer. The problem is that to obtain this fibre, carbon disulphide is used, which is a toxic and polluting product that cannot be recovered after use. This material is called fibranne if it is made up of short fibers (like cotton) and radiates if it is made from continuous fibers (like silk)

Lyocell

The environmental problems of manufacturing viscose have prompted researchers to change the method of manufacturing this fiber. This is how Lyocell was born, a much more environmentally friendly method because unlike viscose, 99% of the solvent used for its manufacture is recovered in an almost closed circuit. Lyocell is the term that designates the manufacturing process, but the most well-known trade names for this material are Tencel® and Lenzing®, from which we supply ourselves.

Ecology and uses

This fiber is mainly used for clothing and household linen given its soft touch and its unparalleled flexibility. We will highlight the biodegradable side of Lyocell, as it is made of 100% cellulose. Lyocell has the advantage of being manufactured in Europe with a reduced carbon footprint, the cellulose being derived from wood from sustainably managed forests.
