What is this ?
It is a fiber derived from acrylic with flame retardant properties. This material is very resistant to electric arcs and explosions, so it is found in technical applications requiring increased resistance to heat and fire.
Benefits of modacrylic fiber
Unlike other inherently flame retardant fibers, modacrylic can be blended with natural fibers, such as cotton or lyocell. The modacrylic fibers are then able to extract oxygen from other flammable fibers in the same mixture. This means that they are not only flame resistant themselves, but also protect the other fibers in the blend from the extreme heat that can create combustion. Another advantage is that these fibers stain easily, which makes the fabric more durable in the wash.
